FAQ for Belt Slip Detectors

Find answers to frequently asked questions regarding our Conveyor Belt Slip Detectors.

Please select the category at the link below:

General

Q.

Can slip detectors be used for overspeed detection?

A.

Yes.

Slip detectors are suitable for detecting both underspeed (belt slip) and overspeed conditions.

They are widely used for overspeed protection on harbor cranes, construction hoists, and other lifting equipment.

Q.

Can slip detectors be applicable to reversible conveyors?

A.

Yes.

Both Speed Switch and Speed Relay are applicable to reversible conveyors.

Please note that, in the case of Speed Relay, separate relay output terminals are provided for each rotation direction.

Accordingly, the control circuit should be designed to accommodate this.

Q.

What is the lowest ambient operating temperature?

The product is intended for use on conveyors or stacker-reclaimers in extremely cold areas.

A.

We have reference installations operating at temperatures down to −30°C.

However, the allowable operating temperature depends on the model specifications as well as the site conditions, so please contact us to confirm suitability for your application.

Q.

Is any moisture-proof or humidity-resistant option available?

The product will be used in a humid environment.

A.

Yes.

The maximum allowable humidity for the standard model is 85% RH.

For environments exceeding 85% RH, we can offer a moisture-proof microswitch option rated up to 95% RH.

However, please contact us in such cases, as the option specifications may vary depending on the conditions.

Speed Switch

Q.

Does dust accumulation on the sensing surface of the proximity switch cause any malfunction?

A.

Yes, malfunction may occur when an excessive amount of dust accumulates on the sensing surface.

In such cases, we recommend installing a sensor cover to prevent dust buildup on the sensor.

Alternatively, a Speed Relay, which does not rely on a proximity sensor, may be more suitable for dusty environments.

Speed Relay

Q.

Can the Speed Relay be used for overspeed protection, such as triggering an alarm or an emergency stop?

A.

Yes, it can be used for both overspeed detection and speed drop (belt slip) detection.

The Speed Relay is widely used in overspeed monitoring applications for harbor cranes, construction hoists, and other lifting equipment.

The Speed Relay is preset at the factory. Therefore, please inform us of the required actuating speed and rated speed at the time of order.

Please note that the actuating speed must be set to at least 130% of the rated speed.

Q.

Can the Speed Relay be used on conveyors other than the one it was originally installed on?

A.

Yes, it is possible, but it depends on several conditions such as belt speed, belt width, and the installation method.

For more details, please refer to the product catalog: Speed Relay Catalog.

Please note that the actuating speed of the Speed Relay should be set to approximately 70% of the conveyor’s rated speed. If the operating conditions of the new conveyor are almost the same as those of the original installation, the Speed Relay may be reused.

If you have any concerns about applying the existing Speed Relay to another conveyor, please contact us with the following information:

  1. Conveyor belt width

  2. Rating speed of the conveyor

  3. Model and serial number of the existing Speed Relay

  4. Delivery Drawing of the Speed Relay (if available)
